Sign Of The Apocalypse: 08/26/08

Today’s Sign Of The Apocalypse is credited to The New York Sun.

Let me mark today’s “Sign” by saying that I’m all about going ‘green’. Taking care of this planet is very important, and we should all do our part. I just don’t necessarily agree with the Global Warming doomsayers Al Gore, who thinks we’ll all die in 50 years because of SUV’s. Anyway, that’s neither here nor there for today’s “Sign”.

This week marks the Democratic National Convention. Where many democrats come together to decide celebrate on their presidential nominee. What I find funny is that the presidential nominee doesn’t attend for the democrats or republicans. Which then leads to these conventions just being huge parties. I promise no more tangents.

Sheraton Hotel guests were surprised when attendants handed them their room keys. Instead of the traditional plastic keycards, guests were required to use harvested wood cards, that are completely bio-degradeable. These cards were handed out as a program for making the Democratic National Convention more ‘green’. This included healthier meals for the attendees, and of course the harvested wood cards. The cards are made from a special type of wood that’s fully harvested; and replanted by the organization responsible for the cards. It’s all very eco-friendly is the point.

The kicker of the story is that the cards ended up not working. After a few hours, guests began complaining that their keycards weren’t opening their doors. The hotel ended up reverting back to the plastic cards, and told guests to keep their wooden ones as souvenirs. HA.
